About the Artist

Biography

With a background from Monmouth College, Illinois in Art and Theater, Tom Hill’s artistic passion is presently steeped in pottery. Ceramics became a catalyst for not only a means of personal expression and functional beauty, but also a medium for education and healing. His present work with young adults with Autism from Have Dreams Park Ridge, IL and previously with High School behaviorally challenged students from Beacon in Calumet Park, IL has been drawn on by years of extensive work and varied experiences.

Returning from teaching ceramics at Camp Starlight in Pennsylvania, Tom perfected studio operations and firing techniques. He worked at Heaven Studio in NY before answering a call to return to Chicago. Tom expanded his teaching and creating process at LillStreet Art Center in Chicago, IL. Tom created and developed the Ceramics program at the Beverly Art Center in Chicago, IL. Tom volentered with the blind at Chicago’s Lighthouse, as he comments of his interest in ‘art as healing’, “this experience has taught me the importance of touch as a potter.” During a transitional period Tom Hill taught and re-explored his art making at The Forum for Creative Study, Blue Island, IL. Tom was accepted for a brief residency at Little Black Pearl Art Center, Chicago, IL, where he taught the staff efficiency of usage of the studio equipment and developed custom glazes. Upon completion of the residency Tom moved to teach at The Center, Community Center Foundation, Palos Park IL.

Tom Hill pottery is sold in Chicago’s local galleries, as well as NY, IN, IL, PA, WI, CA, MI, & VA. Explore the possibilities in art.
